Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I have heard good things about the Rotary Club of Dubuque. How do I go about joining the organization?

Answer: First of all, you are always welcome to visit a Rotary meeting for an in-person evaluation of what Rotary is all about. We meet every Tuesday at noon at the Dubuque Golf & Country Club on Randall Place (just off South Grandview) in Dubuque, Iowa. If you do come to visit, please identify yourself to any Rotarian and they will make you feel at home.

Question: So I visit Rotary, like what I see and would like to become a member of the Rotary Club of Dubuque. What next?

Answer: Request an official application for membership into Rotary, complete it and turn it in to the Club Secretary, Treasurer or President. The application takes only a few minutes to complete (you can also apply online). Ideally, a current Rotarian will act as your sponsor when you apply for membership, but this is not required. Your application will then be presented at the next Board of Directors meeting (Third Monday of the month) for evaluation. The Board members will then vote to have your interest in becoming a Rotarian published in the next edition of the Club's newsletter, The Barrage. When the above process is completed (3-4 weeks), you will be notified by the Club Secretary when your official induction will take place at a regular Rotary meeting. At that time, you will be presented with a packet of information about Rotary along with your Rotary pin. Ideally, the Club would enjoy hearing about you, your family and occupation. This brief report (5 Minutes or less) will help the Rotarians to meet and know you better. During the application for membership process you are strongly urged to attend regular Rotary meetings to learn more about the club and for the club to know you better.

Dues structure - as soon after you have been inducted in Rotary as possible, your dues should be paid. The annual dues for the Rotary Club of Dubuque are $200.00. If you wish, you may pay your dues on a semi-annual basis. You should notify the Club Treasurer about your intentions.

While we are on the subject of finances here are a few important items:

  1. The cost of the meal at Rotary meetings is currently $8.50 and this can be paid at the door each Tuesday. The menu at Rotary meetings is always a tasty buffet meal including milk, water, tea and coffee.
  2. A raffle is conducted at Rotary meetings with profits going to an scholarship fund. Normally, the raffle is $1.00 to enter. Also, during the "Fun and Frolic" portion of Rotary meetings fines may be assessed to members in a humorous and good-natured manner. On average, these fines may total $1.00. For example, if members are not wearing their Rotary pin, or they forget to wear their name badge, they may be fined. Again, "Fun and Frolic" profits going to a scholarship fund and it is conducted to entertain and energize our membership.
