April 26, 2022 - It was a pleasure to have Brenna Burgart, the Recovery Support Services Coordinator at Substance Abuse Services Center (SASC) step in to deliver an informative program on problem gambling. State Representative Shannon Lundgren was our scheduled speaker but she was called back to Des Moines for some unfinished business in the House.

Burgart told us that problem gambling is usually associated with middle and older age, but new gaming options have increased the exposure to younger people. Dubuque has a lot of gaming exposure with 2 casinos, a dog racetrack (closing this year), 50 lottery outlets, and new sports betting. For employers, she outlined several steps to help minimize your exposure to gambling problems.
  • Establish a gambling policy for your business - contact Burgart at SASC for assistance.
  • Conduct regular awareness training, especially if your business is financial or your employees handle money - SASC can assist.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles and stress reduction strategies
Burgart also told us about the Your Life Iowa initiative from the Iowa Dept. of Public Health. This is an online resource to connect people with resources, including for problem gambling.

Thanks to program chair, Scott Goins (State Farm Insurance) for lining up this great presentation.

We had some great news from Rotarians, including from Jennifer Klass (founder, Accessorize Me) who was celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary recently. Bob Woodward (TH/Woodward Communications) told us his hockey playing son was graduating magna cum laude from Augsburg University following their appearance in the NCAA D-III Frozen Four
